What to Expect When Settling Accounts
Handling Accounts and Funds- How long will accounts stay open? Until closed or retitled. Acting quickly helps avoid complications.
- What happens to direct deposits? Federal payments like Social Security and VA benefits must be returned after the date of death.
- How do I access funds? If there is a joint owner or beneficiary, funds transfer automatically. Otherwise, legal documents may be required.
- What happens to a credit card if the deceased was the sole borrower? The account is closed, and the estate may be responsible for outstanding balances.
- Can a joint cardholder continue using the card? Yes, the account will be retitled in the surviving borrower’s name.
- What about mortgages and home equity lines? If the deceased was the only borrower, Frontwave will work with heirs to discuss options.
