Celebrating International Credit Union Day

Each year, credit union members around the world come together to celebrate International Credit Union Day®, a moment to recognize the impact of the credit union movement and the millions of people it serves. Today, more than 411 million members across over 100 countries are part of a global network built on one simple idea: people helping people.

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that offer an alternative to traditional for-profit banks. With a member-first approach, they focus on improving the financial wellbeing of individuals, families, and communities. Across the globe, more than 86,000 credit unions provide accessible, affordable financial services that help drive meaningful economic and social progress.

Frontwave Credit Union has been part of that mission for nearly 70 years. What started with a focused purpose has grown into a trusted financial partner for Members across Southern California. From helping Members buy their first home to navigating financial setbacks or planning what’s next, the goal stays the same: real support, when it matters most. That commitment extends beyond banking through Frontwave Give360 and the Frontwave Foundation that strengthen the neighborhoods we serve.

Celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October, International Credit Union Day dates back to 1948. It’s a chance to reflect on the movement’s history while reinforcing the cooperative principles that continue to set credit unions apart.

There’s still work to do. An estimated 1.4 billion people worldwide remain unbanked, without access to essential financial services. Credit unions play a critical role in closing that gap by offering solutions built on trust, access, and long-term opportunity.

Across communities, credit unions mark the occasion through outreach, education, and Member engagement. It’s a time to connect, share stories, and highlight the real impact of putting people first.

More than a celebration, it’s a reminder of what’s possible when financial services are built around people, not profits.
